Despite winning on paper, Meta is losing the battle for users’ hearts when it comes to AI. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has successfully garnered 900 million weekly active users, while Meta struggles with billions of users who feel forced to interact with AI features embedded within WhatsApp chats and Instagram feeds. Essentially, people use ChatGPT because they need a smart assistant, whereas they interact with Meta AI simply because it is in front of them while messaging. This distinction between “intentional” and “passive” users poses a serious threat to Meta’s future in 2026. Harsh criticisms from Alex Kantrowitz, the founder of Big Technology, highlight the stark contrast between Meta’s lavish capital expenditures and the actual user experience in the field.
